And so the morning came where he was forced to stuff all those pairs of unwashed underwear and every ounce of leftover sunscreen back into his duffel to make the long trek home. The cabins were empty, the paths were clear of foot traffic and the lake stood a placid temptation. He stops there for a final breakfast, the first he had to make for himself in days. With his stomach full, he strips down to nothing but his sunburn and tan lines to make a trek into the water.
He can't help but look over at the deflated tubes and remember the past weekend he spent on these grounds. There is still a faint herbal smell in the air, spilled paint on the steps to the upper level of the boat house, and more than one pair of rainbow colored underwear hanging forgotten on a dock post but the campers are gone. He can hear no shrieks of joy, no far off sounds of Friday the 13th playing, no WAP ringing in his ears. There are no brightly colored bucket hats bobbing along the horizon, and not a single red sleeveless tank or tied up blue t-shirt to identify one of the now beloved rainbow of friends.
He gives a twist of his wrist, glancing down at the beads of friendship that are dripping lake water and he knows that though Camp is over, the memories will last until next season when he too can return to this place and do it all again.
Its not goodbye, its see you later. ♥
